MEPZ mass layoff spurs demand for improved TUPAD

According to the group Partido Manggagawa (PM), some 230 workers of Cebu Toyo Corporation have been put on indefinite forced leave as a result of the US-Israel war on Iran. PM is calling for an improved public employment program to assist the laid off workers in transitioning to new and better jobs.

 

“Unfortunately, we fear that the indefinite forced leave is a step towards eventual retrenchment for the workers. Further, the mass layoff promises to be just the first wave of war-related terminations. Thus, the government needs to set up a job assistance program in dialogue with labor organizations,” stated Dennis Derige, spokesperson of the Cebu chapter of PM and also vice chair of the Regional 7 industrial tripartite peace council.

 

Cebu Toyo produces optical lenses for electronic products and is located in the Mactan Economic Zone 2 at Basak, Lapu-Lapu City. The indefinite forced leave was a response to supply chain disruptions due to the war in the Middle East, according to the management of Cebu Toyo.

 

PM is assisting the workers and is coordinating with the local office of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for a dialogue with the affected workers. “This is a test case of the emergency powers granted to President Bongbong Marcos, Jr. With great power comes great responsibility. We demand an urgent response from the President’s alter ego in the DOLE,” Derige asserted.

 

PM has criticized the existing emergency employment program called TUPAD for being too limited and entangled in patronage politics. The group is calling for a new public employment program that is delinked from politicians and instead based on a national registry of legitimate beneficiaries. Moreover, it is calling for 100 days of paid work not the usual 10 days. Finally, PM wants to prioritize climate jobs instead of the street sweeping that TUPAD currently implements.

 

Derige also called on the regional wage board to fast track the P100 wage petition filed by unions. Derige argued that “The unprecedented emergency powers granted to President Marcos, Jr. is already enough evidence of a supervening event that necessitates an immediate decision by the wage board.”

 

With Labor Day just more than a month away, PM is calling for an expanded ayuda program and an independent foreign policy aside from a P200 legislated wage hike and improved public employment program. “The Philippines should add its voice to the call of the Pope and other global actors for an end to the war and a new rules-based international order based on respect for sovereignty and development,” Derige insisted.

As workers face renewed jobs crisis, green public employment and industrial policy asked

The labor group Partido Manggagawa (PM) today called on the Marcos Jr. administration to urgently rethink its economic and employment priorities following the sharp increase in unemployment recorded in January 2026. The group said the latest labor force figures show troubling signs for Filipino workers, with the unemployment rate climbing to 6 percent, a steep rise compared with 4.3 percent during the same period last year. The level is also approaching the rates seen near the end of the pandemic, when many Filipinos were still struggling to regain lost livelihoods.

 

“The unemployment spike is a warning sign that workers are being left behind. Government cannot sit back and wait for the private sector to solve the jobs crisis. It must actively create jobs and rebuild the economy around the needs of working people,” said Rene Magtubo, PM national chair and Marikina City councilor.

 

The labor organization also cautioned that external developments could further weaken job creation in the coming months. Heightened geopolitical tensions and the economic disruptions stemming from United States President Donald Trump’s war on Iran are already contributing to a global economic downturn.

 

Given these challenges, PM urged the government to immediately implement stronger public employment interventions to support displaced and underemployed workers. It proposed the establishment of a large-scale public jobs program that would provide sustained work rather than short-lived activities. The group stressed that existing programs that offer only a few days of temporary work are not enough to stabilize incomes.

 

Magtubo insisted that “Unlike existing short-term emergency programs that provide only a few days of work, the program should guarantee at least 100 days of paid employment per worker, prioritizing displaced workers, rural laborers, and communities heavily affected by climate disasters.”

 

PM suggested prioritizing green and climate-related jobs, particularly in rural areas where employment losses have been severe. Workers in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries have faced repeated setbacks due to destructive typhoons and widespread flooding linked to worsening climate conditions in recent years.

 

Projects focused on environmental rehabilitation, climate adaptation, and disaster prevention could both generate employment and strengthen the country’s resilience to climate impacts, the group said. Beyond emergency measures, PM stressed that the Philippines needs a long-term development strategy centered on job creation.

 

“We call for a state-led industrial policy that actively promotes labor-intensive industries capable of producing for the domestic market. The government must place decent work at the heart of economic policy. Without decisive action, rising unemployment will continue to undermine the livelihoods of working families across the country,” Magtubo argued.

Women workers on war and crisis

 

On International Women’s Day, Partido Manggagawa (PM) said that imperialist wars and global tensions are making life even harder for working women. Conflicts abroad are pushing up the prices of oil and fuel, which in turn raise the cost of transportation, electricity, and food in the Philippines. For many families already living on tight budgets, this means an even heavier daily struggle to make ends meet, which disproportionately falls on women who bear the burden of domestic and care work.

 

“Kapag may digmaan, hindi lang ito nararamdaman sa battlefield. Nararamdaman ito ng mga ordinaryong babae sa palengke, sa pamasahe, at sa pagba-budget ng maliit na kita ng pamilya,” said Judy Ann Miranda, secretary-general of the labor group. “Habang tumataas ang presyo ng langis at mga bilihin, ang mga manggagawang babae at mga nanay ang unang napipilitang magtipid at magsakripisyo para maitawid ang pamilya sa araw-araw.”

 

Miranda also pointed to the uncertain situation of many overseas Filipino workers in the Middle East, a large number of whom are women working as domestic workers and caregivers. “Maraming Pinay ang napilitang mangibang-bansa para alagaan ang mga pamilya ng iba. Iniwan nila ang sarili nilang mga anak para lang may maipadala sa Pilipinas. Ngayon, dahil sa tensyon at gyera sa rehiyon, sila na naman ang nanganganib mawalan ng trabaho o mapilitang lumikas,” she said.

 

The Cebu chapter of PM is holding a women’s day rally today while the Bacolod chapter is conducting an indoor gathering of women workers in urban and rural areas of Negros Island, including sugarcane farms. The main demands are wage hike, regular jobs, secure livelihood and social protection for workers of all genders, along with calls against US-Israel war and abuse of women.

 

Yesterday, women leaders of the PM in Metro Manila were gathered in an indoor forum to commemorate International Women’s Day and also plan for month-long activities to advance women’s advocacies such as community laundromats and whole-day long day care centers.

 

The group also criticized the sexist remark made by Cong. Suntay during a House hearing referencing actress Anne Curtis, which was later defended by lawyer Ferdinand Topacio. According to Judy Ann Miranda, these kinds of remarks reflect a deeper problem in society. “Hindi aksidente ang ganitong pagtingin sa kababaihan. Sa isang lipunang hindi pantay ang kapangyarihan at yaman, madalas ginagawang biro o bagay ang babae para manatiling mababa ang tingin sa kanila,” Miranda said. “Kapag minamaliit ang kababaihan, mas madaling balewalain ang kanilang mababang sahod, ang mabigat na trabaho sa bahay, at ang sakripisyo ng mga migranteng manggagawa. Kaya ang laban para sa respeto sa kababaihan ay kaugnay ng laban ng mga manggagawa para sa dignidad, disenteng kabuhayan, at tunay na pagkakapantay-pantay.”

Workers to Congress: Don’t exploit Middle East crisis to kill wage reform bill

The Partido Manggagawa (PM) on Wednesday called on the leadership and members of the House of Representatives to stay focused and continue deliberation of the bill abolishing the provincial rate in the face of the escalating military conflict in the Middle East.

 

PM Chair and former partylist representative Renato Magtubo made this call amid fear that the ongoing war could trigger restraint among policymakers, for instance, preventing the enactment of the Kamanggagawa wage reform bill which is awaiting plenary approval at the House of Representatives prior to the outbreak of the Middle East crisis.

 

Local pump prices of oil have started to spike despite the assurance made by the Department of Energy (DoE) that the country has enough inventory. The Philippine peso weakened further since Monday. Prices of agricultural inputs are expected to rise also as more than 80% of fertilizer supply is imported.

 

“Our economic managers, in tandem with capital, are very clever at throwing a monkey-wrench to any wage proposal even under normal conditions. Now they will surely exploit the Middle East crisis to kill the wage reform bill. The House must shield itself from this kind of pressure,” stated Magtubo.

 

Abolishing the provincial rate by establishing a national minimum wage and designating the NCR rate as floor wage is an initial step aimed at rectifying 36 years of injustice under the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB), explained Magtubo.

 

“Living wage remains the ultimate ‘regime change’ workers will continue to demand,” added Magtubo.

Iran’s retaliation shows what could happen if the Philippines hosts US war games and military hubs for foreign wars of aggression

 

Women of Partido Manggagawa (PM) strongly condemn the ongoing joint US-Israel assault on Iran, which has triggered retaliatory strikes on US facilities in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and other Gulf states. This dangerous escalation has already disrupted global travel and trade, and killed civilians, and it threatens to spiral into wider regional war.

 

“We reject imperialist wars that cost countless civilian lives. History shows that when the US wages war, women and children suffer the most—displaced, impoverished, denied healthcare and education, and exposed to violence and long-term trauma,” said PM Secretary-General Judy Ann Miranda.

 

She added that the conflict also puts at least 2 million Filipino migrant workers in the Middle East at serious risk— many of them women working as domestic workers, nurses, caregivers, and service workers. They left home because of poverty and lack of decent jobs. Now they face the risk of bombings, displacement, job loss, unpaid wages, and sudden evacuation. When war erupts, migrant workers are often the most vulnerable—trapped by restrictive contracts, limited mobility, and lack of protection. Tragically, a Filipina caregiver was killed in an airstrike in Israel during retaliatory attacks, underscoring the mortal danger confronting Filipino workers in the region.

 

PM warned that the Philippines faces real danger under the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA). By allowing US troops access to local bases, ports, and facilities for war games and military operations, our country risks becoming a strategic launch point—and a potential target—in expanding US wars against Iran or China.

 

Miranda explained that military basing does not guarantee security but exposes Filipino communities to retaliation. War and militarization would worsen gendered violence, economic insecurity, and the deprivation of basic services for women and families here at home.

 

Women workers demand:

 

Abrogate the VFA and all foreign military arrangements.

Stop the US-Israel genocide on Palestine and war on Iran.

Push for an immediate ceasefire.

Ensure the protection, safety and evacuation readiness for all Overseas Filipino Workers in conflict zones.

Redirect military spending to social services—healthcare, education, decent work, childcare, housing, and protection against gender violence.

Stop the U.S.–Israel War on Iran! Defend Working People Everywhere!

We condemn the imperialist assault launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, a deadly offensive that has already killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other civilians and leaders, and sparked tit-for-tat strikes across the region.

 

This war is not about peace — it is about power, profit, and dominance. Imperialist aggression and regime change have been hallmarks of U.S. foreign policy for decades, from Iraq, Libya, and Syria to Venezuela and Cuba. Each intervention leaves behind devastation, displacement, and deeper instability.

 

Filipino workers—especially the more than 2 million OFWs in the Middle East whose livelihoods depend on jobs far from home—stand to gain nothing from these wars except uncertainty, rising violence, and possible loss of work. In the face of escalating airstrikes and regional tensions, the Philippine government has rightly activated safety measures and contingency plans to protect Filipinos in the region.

 

The death of a reactionary figure like Khamenei does not herald peace. U.S. and Israeli policymakers have openly pursued regime change and military dominance as strategic goals. Such policies have inflamed conflicts, deepened suffering, and fueled cycles of retaliation that only benefit military contractors, oil interests, and geopolitical elites.

 

We join peace-loving workers and peoples around the world to resist every war of aggression. True peace is achieved by uprooting the systems that profit from endless war—not by toppling one regime or another.

 

We call on President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. to take a principled stand against the joint U.S.–Israel military offensive and reject the logic of imperialist intervention. At the same time, we demand that the government provide urgent support and safe, voluntary repatriation for all overseas Filipino workers in the Middle East while safe passage remains possible.

Workers group call for release of Sumud activists, condemn Israeli interdiction of flotilla

 

Partido Manggagawa (PM) strongly condemns the illegal capture of hundreds of international activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israeli naval forces. This is not just a violation of international law but proof of how the apartheid regime of Israel uses violence to defend its interests, crush solidarity, and enforce a genocidal blockade on Palestinians in Gaza.

The flotilla was a peaceful mission—carrying food and medicine as a symbolic humanitarian aid. Its interception in international waters shows how Israel acts as a fortress for global capital, keeping Palestinians oppressed and starved. The activists’ action directly challenges the siege and exposes the governments that continue to fund, trade with, or protect Israel while pretending to show “concern.”

The famine in Gaza is not an accident but an outcome of a deliberate human-made crisis and entangled with the genocide by Israel with complicity by the world’s imperialist powers. Governments enable this through arms sales, trade, and silence. The flotilla has inspired solidarity. It is proof that people can resist and refuse this system of oppression.

Workers and unions show the real alternative. Dockworkers in Genoa threatened to block all of Europe if contact with the flotilla was lost, saying not a single nail would be shipped to Israel. Italy’s general strike for Gaza shows that organized labor has the power to disrupt the capitalist war machine and stand with the oppressed.

The flotilla’s greatest value is political—it breaks through the media and political shield protecting Israel and shows that the fight for Palestine is a fight for humanity itself. The activists—workers, socialists, and people from over 44 countries—represent a growing international resistance.

With the backing of imperialist powers, Israel has once again shown its contempt for life and solidarity. Our task is to build people’s power and resistance—in workplaces, unions, and communities—to break not only the blockade on Gaza but the system that sustains it.

In line with anti-capitalist internationalism, PM demands:

§             The immediate release of all flotilla participants.

§             The lifting of the blockade on Gaza.

§             An end to all complicity by governments.

We call on workers and unions to block arms shipments and call on their governments to cut economic ties with Israel. Together we cooperate to build of a mass movement that links Palestinian liberation with the global struggle against capitalism, exploitation, and genocide.

Middle East Conflict Fuels Oil Price Hikes, Endangers Migrants

 

Oil companies are raising prices by over P5 per liter tomorrow due to escalating conflict in the Middle East, Partido Manggagawa (PM) calls for an immediate halt to the bombings by the United States and Israel in Iran, and a ceasefire in Gaza, in defense of the safety and welfare of Filipino migrant workers and the broader public.

 

“The world needs a war against poverty not a war of aggression by Bibi and Donald. This war is not just a distant conflict—it’s a crisis that reaches our dinner tables. As war rages on, fuel prices spike, remittances decline, and working families suffer the consequences,” said Lawrence Cusipag, one of PM’s spokespersons.

 

Over 200 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) have requested return from Iran and Israel following the Department of Foreign Affairs' decision to raise the situation to Alert Level 3. Yet as they return, they face an economy plagued by low wages and rising prices.

 

The latest Israeli airstrikes on Iran have intensified regional instability and come on top of Israel’s continuing attacks on Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. The United States has provided unwavering military and financial support to Israel, even vetoing multiple UN ceasefire resolutions.

 

PM emphasizes that the roots of the conflict lie in long-standing imperialist interests—particularly control over oil and other natural resources in the region. History shows this same pattern in the US invasion of Iraq and the demonization of Iran's nuclear program.

 

“The real fight is not between nations, but against poverty. War benefits only the powerful; it is the workers and the poor who pay the price,” argued Cusipag.

Anti-war network condemns US veto of UN resolution calling for humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza

 

The Network Opposed to War (NO TO WAR) strongly denounces the United States' veto of the UN Security Council resolution, which called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, in response to the UN Secretary General’s call under Article 99 of the Charter. This regrettable action occurred on the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

 

The veto by the United States and the abstention of the United Kingdom effectively negated the 13 majority vote of the Security Council as well as the more than 90 countries, including the Philippines, which endorsed the resolution. 

 

NO TO WAR-Palestine Solidarity Pilipinas condemns these decisions, highlighting the blatant disregard for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as warned by the UN Secretary General, posing a threat to international peace and security.

 

The ongoing atrocities in Gaza, including daily massacres, displacement, and dehumanization of Palestinians, affect all, including doctors, journalists, and UN staff. The complete destruction of Gaza ensures a bleak future for its residents. It is deeply troubling that the United States and the United Kingdom openly support the genocide and ethnic cleansing of the oppressed Palestinian people, turning a blind eye to the violations of human rights and humanitarian law. Despite global condemnation, Israel continues to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity.

 

In November of this year, the Philippines, along with 144 nations, condemned Israel's illegal settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan. Unfortunately, this resolution was likewise opposed by seven countries, led by the US, UK, and Israel.

Given the apparent ineffectiveness of the international body, it is now imperative for the global community to uphold the will of free peoples worldwide.

 

NO TO WAR however believes that the increasing diplomatic isolation of the US, UK, and Israel is shaping a new global perspective on democracy and solidarity, particularly among the youth.

PM joins human rights groups in village education and candle-lighting at CHR

 

The Partido Manggagawa (PM) is one with the human rights community in seeking justice for all the victims of human rights violations in the country, and for the countless victims of wars, including  those from Israel’s continuing campaign of genocide against the Palestinians.

 

Here in the Philippines, we join the In Defense of Human Rights and Dignity Movement (IDEFEND) today in celebration of the Human Rights Week and International Human Rights Day on December 10 through a village march and candle lighting at the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in UP Diliman.

 

Workers continue to face human rights violations in many forms such as contractualization, violation of freedom of association and the right to a living wage, red-tagging, and worse, killing.

 

Palestinians, on the other hand, are suffering the worst kind of oppression known to humankind. They are denied all basic rights - the right to life, food, water, shelter, etc.

 

PM will continue to stand with all the oppressed people and uphold the principles and values of human rights and a life with dignity.

Workers demand rights and freedom, end to wars on Bonifacio Day

 

 

Despite the government's decision to move Bonifacio Day to November 27, labor groups, led by the Nagkaisa labor coalition, pressed forward with their march this morning, November 30, alongside organizations in the No to War network.

 

Amidst the intensifying cost of living crisis, the coalition declared at the Mendiola rally that workers would never enjoy the government's holiday economics.

 

Nagkaisa pointed out that, despite adjustments in daily minimum in various regions, wages still lag significantly behind the rising cost of living. Likewise, the erosion of workers' rights, including the freedom to form unions and security of tenure, remains a critical concern.

 

Emphasizing the legacy of Andres Bonifacio, Nagkaisa highlighted that the fight for freedom from colonial rule was intertwined with the pursuit of a dignified life for all Filipinos. However, the coalition lamented that post-colonial republics failed to secure genuine sovereignty, and the freedom from poverty remains elusive.

 

The coalition called for a redirection of government priorities to address these pressing concerns rather than engaging in war preparations or supporting the political agenda of the same colonial powers who were behind many of these conflicts.

 

The coalition red flags the potentially irreversible consequences of forging additional military agreements beyond the existing pacts with the US, particularly with Japan, and the looming possibility of similar arrangements with the UK, France, and Australia - all using China as the boogeyman - for they will only heighten the tensions in the region.

 

Nagkaisa warned against the devastating impact of new wars, citing the peoples suffering, exemplified by the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Expressing solidarity with war victims globally, Nagkaisa urged unity in calling for an end to all conflicts. Specifically addressing the Israel-Palestine situation, the coalition demanded a permanent ceasefire and an end to what they termed as Israel's campaign of genocide in Gaza.

 

While acknowledging the complexity of this age-old conflict, Nagkaisa believes a ceasefire could pave the way for de-escalation and create spaces for diplomatic negotiations.

The Filipino people have a long and storied history of resistance against oppression. From the Spanish, Americans, the Japanese, and current injustices, Filipinos continue to march, protest, and organize. It is in this spirit that we mass movements and people’s organizations mobilize today. Learning from the example of Andres Bonifacio, we aspire for a Philippines built on freedom, peace, and common prosperity.

 

The Network Opposed to War (No to War), as a grouping of people’s organizations, mass movements, and trade unions, is in the streets today as we celebrate the birthday of Andres Bonifacio. Inspired by the life and struggle of the Supremo, we mobilize today for a society free from violence and oppression. Like the Katipuneros before us, we see that the dream of justice and equality is a desire we Filipinos share with peoples all over the world. From Manila to Gaza, Burma and Kiev, the dream of peace built on justice continues to animate millions.

 

We are adamant in our opposition to all forms of war. It is clear that in times of conflict, it is workers and ordinary people that are harmed and sacrificed. End to wars and poverty highlight workers’ Bonifacio Day protest

 

In the wake of the devastating consequences witnessed in conflicts such as the ongoing disputes between Israel and Palestine, Ukraine and Russia, Syria, and numerous other smaller conflicts worldwide, the Partido Manggagawa (PM) issues a stern warning: "It is imperative to stop these wars so that focus is redirected to more immediate and pressing concerns faced by the world’s people, particularly the urgent battles against poverty, inequality, and the climate crisis," ," stated Partido Manggagawa Chair Renato Magtubo.

 

Joining the Mendiola rally organized by Nagkaisa Labor Coalition and the Network Opposed to War (No to War) on Bonifacio Day, PM emphasizes the need for secure jobs and increased wages to combat the ripple effects of unemployment and the rising cost of living. In Cebu, a counter march from Plaza Independencia to Colon St., was held by the same groups, including the Cebu chapter of PM.

 

“However, the realization of these aspirations, echoing the Katipunan dreams of ‘kalayaan at kaginhawahan’ remains elusive 160 years after the birth of Gat Andres Bonifacio. Addressing the potential outbreak of new conflicts, Magtubo expresses concern over increasing tensions between global superpowers vying for hegemony and expansionism, as highlighted in the analysis of Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro. The labor group emphasizes the devastating impact on working people, drawing parallels with historical events like the two world wars, scores of civil wars, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine due to Israel's campaign of siege and genocide.

 

In solidarity with the Palestinian people, PM aligns with the Philippines' No to War network, advocating for a permanent ceasefire and an end to Israel's genocidal campaign in Gaza. The coalition posits that colonial powers, reminiscent of Bonifacio's era and the Katipunan, persist in maintaining control and exploiting weaker nations through militarism, occupation, and wars.

"The unfinished revolution for complete freedom from colonial powers and the emancipation of the Filipino people from poverty remains the legacy of the Katipunan—a cause we will persistently pursue," concluded Magtubo.

PHILIPPINE GROUPS FORM ANTI-WAR NETWORK: Call for Permanent Ceasefire, End to Genocide in Gaza

 

 We, the Philippine groups representing various interests and advocacies, including those on human rights, labor, women, youth, urban poor, Moro and IPs, environment, and political parties, form ourselves today into NO TO WAR network in solidarity with the world’s people who are suffering from the devastating impacts of ongoing conflicts and in preventing the slide of other conflicts into new wars, including those in Asia and possibly in the Philippines.

 

As an anti-war network, we are campaigning for peace with justice and will continue to oppose the ruling establishment's inclination toward war, militarization, colonization, and destruction, both of humanity and the environment.

 

In solidarity with the Palestinian people, we join the international community in calling for a permanent ceasefire, a stop to genocide in Gaza, and an end to Israeli occupation.  Words cannot adequately convey the horrors of war being experienced by the Palestinians from the endless airstrikes and ground raids carried out by Israel. There must be a stop to this genocide and human suffering!

 

We advocate for an unconditional and permanent ceasefire because we believe this is the critical first step towards de-escalation, facilitating humanitarian aid, and creating a conducive environment for brokering negotiations and dialogues. Without a a permanent ceasefire, sparks of violence will only lead to the escalation of further violence.

 

The international community, especially the free countries within the United Nations, must step up to address the intensifying humanitarian crisis in Gaza. They should redouble their efforts to find diplomatic and political solutions to the Palestine-Israel conflict and cease support for Israel’s campaign of siege and genocide in Gaza by halting aid from the US and other western powers.

 

As a contribution to the growing peace and anti-war movement across the globe, the Philippines’ NO TO WAR network will be holding a series of activities ranging from teach-ins, physical and online fora, as well as direct actions to amplify our cause.

 

In particular, in addition to its obligation to secure Filipinos on both sides, including the safe release of the remaining Filipino hostages in Gaza, we urge the Philippine government to support the UN resolution calling for a ceasefire and the creation of free corridors for humanitarian aid. In the 1930s, when many other countries refused to take in Holocaust refugees, our nation welcomed 1,200 Jewish individuals from Shanghai, China, ensuring their safety from the genocide perpetrated by

Nazi Germany. In a similar manner, we implore the Philippine government not to abstain and, once again, to stand against genocide—this time, by calling on Israel for a permanent ceasefire.

 

On November 30, the NO TO WAR network will link up with Nagkaisa Labor Coalition in commemorating Andres Bonifacio's day. Bonifacio, alongside fellow Katipuneros and Katipuneras, led the revolutionary resistance against Spanish colonialism. Members of NO TO WAR collectively believe that the historical legacy of colonialism, occupation, and militarism has perpetuated conflicts throughout modern times. Therefore, our opposition remains against militarization and the imposition of unjust policies by foreign powers in our country.

 

NO TO WAR will also be part of the human rights community in celebrating Human Rights Week at the start of December.

“War is violence against women”—feminist groups in the Philippines

 

On the first day of a 18-day global campaign to end violence against women, feminist groups in the Philippines highlighted the call for a permanent ceasefire as a step towards a permanent solution to the question of Palestine.

 

“War is violence against women. It is as clear as day in the ongoing hostage and prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas that women are disproportionately victimized in war. The history of conflicts reveals this ugly truth. Thus, we call for a stop to the war in Palestine and elsewhere. And demand a just peace,” argued Judy Ann Miranda, secretary general of Partido Manggagawa (PM). PM is among the groups that participated in today’s activity.

 

A hundred women leaders from various organizations that comprise the World March of Women-Pilipinas marched to the grounds of the Commission of Human Rights today for a rousing and festive program to launch the violence against women campaign. Community assemblies in several working class areas in Metro Manila followed later in the day.

 

The launch of the campaign served as an opportunity for women to raise the urgent call for solidarity to the people of Palestine. In the statement released for the event, the World March of Women-Pilipinas, stated that “Israeli forces through persistent bombings on Palestinian communities, kill[ed] more than 14,000 Palestinians. Most hurt were women and children, as hospitals were also bombed. World March of Women members in Palestine were [also among those] attacked.”

 

“The so-called humanitarian pause should give way to a sustained ceasefire in both Gaza and the West Back. A permanent ceasefire then enables political negotiations to end the Israeli occupation of Palestine,” Miranda explained. The women’s groups’ call for solidarity with Palestine is part of a sustained advocacy by social movements, trade unions, human rights organizations and grassroots communities in the Philippines.

 

Next week, on November 30, which is a traditional day of mobilization for workers in the Philippines, trade unions along with other civil society groups will also underscore the demand for a permanent ceasefire and a stop to the genocide in Palestine. Today, a rally is being held in Manila by Muslim and Christian organizations together with progressive groups. The mobilization is billed as a march for peace and justice in Palestine.

 

All these solidarity actions build upon earlier activities by numerous organizations in different parts of the country, including in the southern island of Mindanao which has a substantial Muslim population. Among those actions was a rally outside the Catholic Church in Manila last November 4 which was a local response to the call by the International People’s Assembly for a global day of action for Palestine.

 

“The drums of war are beating so hard that they are not only deafening but are inciting harm and violence against women,” according to the World March of Women-Pilipinas. It added  that “Historically, women and children suffer the most during war in the form of hunger, sexual assault, physical violence including unjust imprisonment as hostages of warring parties, loss of home and of family members.”

 

Miranda averred that “Women also do not want to be caught in the middle of the US and China conflict. We call for a peaceful solution to the West Philippine Sea issue. Through negotiations among the claimants, we want to guarantee the right of fishers, Filipinos and other nationalities, to gainful livelihood in what should be treated as common fishing grounds.”

 

Tensions in the South China Sea are escalating with the United States forming various military alliances such as the Quad and the AUKUS in a bid to contain China and maintain control over the busy shipping lanes in the region. The Quad is an alliance between the US, Japan, Australia and India while AUKUS unites Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

 

Recently the US has avowed that it will respond to an attack on Philippine ships in the disputed sea according to terms of a mutual defense treaty. Meanwhile, talks are ongoing for a visiting forces agreement with Japan.

 

The threats of war in the South China Sea has become a convenient pretext for an influx of the American soldiers and weapons to the Philippines. In 1991, US military bases in the country were kicked out in the culmination of a long struggle led by progressive movements to assert national sovereignty and an independent foreign policy. However, the war on terror opened the door for the return of the American military as so-called “visiting forces.”

 

The feminist groups recalled that prostitution and abuse of women and girls flourished around the sites of the former US military bases in the Philippines. Since the return of US troops in the country, they have been involved in two separate incidents involving the rape of a woman and the murder of a trans. All of the accused soldiers are now back in America after controversial decisions of acquittal or pardon.

Ceasefire now and humanitarian aid to Gaza towards an end to Israeli occupation

 

We join the majority of the United Nations and the peoples of the world in campaigning for peace and in calling for an immediate ceasefire to the armed conflict in Gaza to pave the way for a negotiated, internationally brokered political solution to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

 

By means of war, Israel has dispossessed the Palestinians of their right to existence as a free nation, with their territories effectively occupied and ghettoized by Israeli forces since the Nakba of 1948. This horrific condition suffered continuously by the Palestinian people was made possible with the imposition of unimaginable forms of repression, including killings and an unjust economic embargo, while the Israeli government continues to enjoy massive military and economic assistance from the US and other Western powers.

 

The retaliatory campaign by Israel to completely siege Gaza by cutting off food, water, and electricity supplies to annihilate “subhuman” Palestinians is not simply out of bounds but is downright genocide that needs to be opposed to avert a colossal humanitarian crisis.

 

We continue to emphasize that the only solution we see for peace to finally reign in this region is for the peoples of the world, along with institutions such as the United Nations, to campaign for an end to Israel’s occupation and continued land grabbing in Palestinian territories, and to guarantee the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people.

 

The Philippines maintains diplomatic relations with Palestine since 1989, thus working for freedom and peace and preserving mutual respect with each other as independent nations will work better than being torn apart by geo-political alignments and other relations dictated by big powers.

 

However, we find the vote of abstention to the UN ceasefire resolution by the Philippine government politically reprehensible since a “no position” stand in the face of a glaring state of genocide and humanitarian crisis in Gaza works in favor of imperialist powers who seek for the total extermination of any Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation.

 

We therefore demand that the Philippine government reverse its stand in favor of the UN ceasefire resolution as this is the most urgent need at the moment to stop further loss of lives and destruction, facilitate global humanitarian aid to Gaza, and formulate a workable and just solution to end the war.

 

We likewise call on the Philippine government to exert all efforts to determine the actual condition and secure the safe release and repatriation of Filipinos who reportedly went missing or have been killed in the October 7 attack by Hamas. At least 30,000 Filipinos live in Israel, and 100 live in Gaza Strip, according to reports.

Statement on the War in Ukraine

 

No to Putin’s war in Ukraine!

No to NATO military intervention!

Humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian refugees!

Solidarity with the anti-war protests in Russia!

 

Partido Manggagawa (Workers Party-Philippines) denounces the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian military and the Putin regime. There is no valid reason for Russia to invade and annex Ukraine which is a sovereign country. The alibis asserted by Putin are baseless. It thinly masks its expansionist desires and imperialist aims.

 

We support the anti-war protests in Russia against the invasion of Ukraine. It is through the development of a broad anti-war movement inside and outside Russia that peace can be achieved.

 

In this respect, we oppose the call for military intervention by Western countries under NATO against Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. A military confrontation between NATO and Russia is a recipe for disaster if not another world war. Such a scenario brings the world to the abyss of nuclear war.

 

In fact, NATO’s own expansionist aims to extend its membership eastward to Ukraine and the very borders of Russia gave Putin a convenient pretext for the invasion. Even as we condemn Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, we do not condone NATO’s expansionism. It is entirely hypocritical for Biden to slam Putin when the US has its own bloody history of direct invasion, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Grenada, and proxy wars in Africa, and Central and Latin America.

 

We call for extending humanitarian assistance to civilian refugees from the war in Ukraine. We too support solidarity actions by trade unions and labor movements to end the war in Ukraine. The refusal of airport workers in Pisa, Italy to load arms destined for Ukraine is an exemplary action that continues the tradition of the proletarian solidarity against Israel’s occupation of Palestine and siege of Gaza.

 

In the Philippines, we work for awareness raising among organized and unorganized workers for an anti-war position on the basis of working-class internationalism.

End US and Israel’s war of aggression against oppressed nations

Statement on Israel’s Occupation of Palestine

The Partido ng Manggagawa (Labor Party-Philippines) joins the global call and campaign in stopping and opposing Israel’s brutal war of aggression against the Palestinian people.

The party is equally indignant over the indisposed stance of powerful nations, particularly the US, which eventually led to the shameful failure of the UN system to stop or prevent Israel’s bloody occupation of the Gaza Strip. The US government in particular should also be held responsible for its unconditional support for the aggressor party by providing Israel not only with modern weapons but also with the sanction to go for unilateral action, like what it did in Iraq.

During this time of severe global economic crisis, wars mainly serve the expansionist agenda of imperialist nations not the economic need of the oppressed, jobless and hungry people. The Palestinians, Iraqis, Afghans, the Africans, Asians, Europeans -- or the world’s peoples had had enough of wars. Amid the crisis, workers and poor people need no tanks and missiles but land and factories to work, not bullets but food, not destructive arms but public goods.

The mounting body count and pictures of destructions show the horrendous nature of this war. The Palestinian people are clearly suffering not from the wrath of a resentful and jealous god but from the evil deed of its neighbor which want another piece of land to grab. Thus, resisting and opposing past and present Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands is a legitimate struggle workers around the world must recognize and support.

The aggression must be stopped and freedom be restored for Palestinian people. End the mass murder! Stop aerial and ground assaults against the Hamas and the civilian population. Israeli blockades must also be lifted to facilitate entry of medical and food supplies for the victims of war.

To end the escalation of war, further loss of lives and destruction, we demand the pullout of Israeli troops from the Gaza and other occupied Palestinian territories and that Israel submit to international call for an immediate ceasefire.

Moreover, we also demand to the Philippine government to issue an official position opposing the war. While the interest of Filipinos in Palestine is a paramount concern, and for that matter the government must act with dispatch, expressing official government position or wisdom against the war, either in a bilateral or multilateral way or thru the UN system, would serve the best interest of our OFWs in particular, and the world peace in general.
