On ICC denial of Duterte’s interim release

The pre-trial chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) was correct in considering Duterte a “flight risk” in denying the former President his plea for interim release.

Duterte, even when relieved of his most powerful position in the Philippines, remains a symbol of fear and tyranny, while her daughter, VP Sara, extends this dynastic power into reality not only for being the second in command but also as the main protagonist of President Marcos.

Keeping Duterte at close watch by the ICC serves the country’s interest well. The next thing we should expect is for the ICC to proceed with the trial forthwith.

Trillion Peso March Movement 10.10 protest launch

Thousands of Filipinos across the country joined the launch of the White Friday Protest, a weekly nationwide noise barrage and candle-lighting campaign organized by the Trillion Peso March Movement (TPMM) to demand accountability and transparency in government spending.

The historic 10.10 launch, marked by simultaneous gatherings from Metro Manila to Cebu, Iloilo, and Bacolod, transformed streets, churches, and community spaces into hubs of peaceful protest and collective prayer. Supporters wore white and carried whistles, pots, torotots, and candles — symbols of vigilance, unity, and resistance against corruption.

“This is a continuing protest — a people’s unwavering quest for truth, justice, and reform,” said Fr. Tony Labiao, Lead Convenor of TPMM, during the noise barrage and candle lighting at the main hub, EDSA Shrine.

The launch drew strong moral backing from the Catholic Church. Cardinal Jose Advincula, Archbishop of Manila, issued a pastoral letter calling all parishes to deliver the Oratio Imperata, a prayer for the nation’s cleansing from corruption. At 8:00 PM, churches across the Archdiocese rang their bells — a gesture Cardinal Advincula described as “a prophetic cry of indignation and outrage against the evil of corruption, and a resounding call to contrition and conversion.”

Modeled after the landmark Million People March of 2013, the Trillion Peso March Movement represents a new wave of citizen engagement. But unlike a one-day protest, this movement seeks to build a sustained, nationwide campaign for truth, accountability, and reform.

Participants are encouraged to join weekly White Friday actions — from school and office breaks at 12:00 noon, to 6:00 PM rush-hour protests, and 8:00 PM synchronized candle lighting and prayers. Citizens are urged to post photos and videos using hashtags such as #TrillionPesoMarch, #Kalampag, and #BusinaProtesta to amplify their call for justice.

“Magpapatuloy ang pangangalampag hangga’t hindi seryosong maparusahan ang mga korap,” TPMM organizers declared.

As the movement gains traction, organizers are envisioning a broader evolution — what supporters now call the “Trillion People March Movement.”

“This is about sustained accountability and civic awakening,” said Atty. Howie Calleja, TPMM Spokesperson. “The goal is not only to expose corruption but to reform the systems that allow it to persist.”

The weekly White Friday protests are expected to continue through the rest of 2025 — potentially culminating in large-scale assemblies by early 2026 if momentum holds.

For now, the ringing of bells and the clamor of pots and whistles every Friday night signal something deeper — not just outrage, but a renewal of civic consciousness and people power.

Workers and poor to join TPMM 10.10 protest launch

Organized workers and poor will join the Trillion Peso March Movement’s launch of weekly noise barrage and candle lighting today. The event today dubbed 10.10 launch will see synchronized protest actions led by the Catholic Church to push for accountability in the corruption-ridden flood control projects.

“Workers and poor are joining students and the rest of the nation in outrage over the waste of the people’s money by politicians, government officials and private contractors. Buwis namin, wag nakawin. Tuloy ang laban hanggang makulong ang mga mandarambong!,” explained Rene Magtubo, chair of Partido Manggagawa (PM).

He added that “We oppose the resign all and snap election call of Senator Alan Peter Cayetano as this is a Sara Duterte for president maneuver. Instead, we demand accountability and change. Workers suffer from corruption, low wages, endo jobs, lack of services and undemocratic governance. Para tapusin ang katiwalian at iba pang problema ng bansa, kailangang baguhin ang sistema.”

PM chapters all across the country are participating in the 10.10 protest launch and are preparing to sustain the weekly noise barrage and candle lighting activities. The protest actions to be led by PM are as follows:

MEDIA RELEASE

Trillion Peso March Movement (TPMM)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Trillion Peso March Movement Launches “White Friday” Protest: A Weekly Noise Barrage and Candle Lighting Against Corruption

Manila, Philippines — The Trillion Peso March Movement (TPMM) is calling on all Filipinos across the country to unite in a powerful display of people’s outrage and hope through the “White Friday Protest,” a nationwide noise barrage and candle lighting every Friday at 6:00 PM.

The campaign kicks off with the 10.10 Launch, marking the start of a sustained citizens’ action demanding accountability and transparency in government spending and corruption cases.

“Saan ka man, sabay tayo! Palakasin pa ang ingay, ituloy ang laban! Panagutin lahat ng korap!”

“This is not just a protest — it’s a people’s vigil for truth, justice, and reform,” said the movement’s convenors.

“From homes to highways, parishes to workplaces, we’re inviting everyone to make noise and light candles until every peso of the people’s money is accounted for.”

The launch event will be highlighted by a 6:00 PM Mass at the EDSA Shrine, followed by a noise barrage, candle lighting, and the singing of Bayan Ko.

Church Support and Moral Call

The Trillion Peso March Movement hails the pastoral letter of Cardinal Jose Advincula, Archbishop of Manila, which directs all churches in the archdiocese to pray the Oratio Imperata — an obligatory prayer for the cleansing and healing of our nation amid widespread corruption.

The directive also includes the ringing of all church bells every 8:00 PM, described as “both a prophetic cry of indignation and outrage against the evil of corruption, and a resounding call to contrition and conversion.”

At 8:00 PM, the St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Scout Magbanua, Quezon City will lead a noise barrage and bell ringing, headed by Rev. Fr. Romerico Prieto, in solidarity with communities nationwide echoing the same call for truth and accountability.

Noise barrage and candle-lighting hubs will also kick off in local parishes and communities across Metro Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, and other regions nationwide.

Group calls for safety committees in the wake of BPO violations during Cebu earthquake

A group of call center workers demanded that safety committees be immediately formed in all BPO companies with worker members to be elected in the wake of occupational safety and health violations by companies during the recnt earthquake. “Workers must have voice and participation in the workplace, especially with regard to safety and health concerns. This will save workers’ lives,” Gilbert Romo, spokesperson for the Inter-Call Center Association of Workers (ICCAW), asserted.

The Republic Act No. 11058 or Occupational Safety and Health Law  mandates the establishment of safety committees with employee representatives. The same law stipulates fines of up to P100,000 for OSH violations. “These are two ways to ensure that this hazardous behavior does not happen again,” Romo added.

Thus, ICCAW is calling on the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to levy fines on BPO companies which put employee lives at risk during the earthquake. Romo stated that the majority of BPOs at the Cebu IT Park and Cebu Business Park did not allow their employees to leave the premises at the height of the earthquake or called them back to work after just a couple of hours despite the risk of aftershocks. Some BPO employees resigned on the spot out of fear for their lives. “Call centers put profit above people’s lives and safety. This is unacceptable. We call on the DOLE for urgent action on this blatant violation of the OSH Law,” Romo said.

ICCAW called on fellow BPO workers to come forward with testimonies of the unsafe actions of the management of call centers amid the earthquake. “BPO workers are not immortal. We are humans. Similar to how BPOs ask employees to go to work despite heavy rains and widespread flooding, these companies prioritized smooth running of operations over the welfare of their employees. Working in the graveyard shift—which is common in BPOs—is already a health risk but keeping employees at work during an earthquake is too much. Hanapbuhay ang kailangan naming manggagawa, hindi hanappatay,” Romo insisted.

ICCAW is an industry-wide group of BPO employees that was founded in 2013 in Cebu in solidarity with workers of a call center that abruptly shut down. It currently has members in different call centers in the Cebu IT Park. In 2014 it came out with an 8-point agenda of pro-labor reforms in the BPO industry. These include tax breaks, bond to indemnify workers in case of closure, quick reaction teams in case of sudden shutdown, hospitalization insurance, above minimum salary, regular labor inspections, elected workers representatives in a grievance machinery, and regularization of employees.

BBM asked to demand reinstatement of visas of deported Pinoy seafarers

The militant group Partido Manggagawa (PM) called on the administration of President Bong Bong Marcos, Jr. to act on the continued deportations by the US of Filipino seafarers working on cruise ships. A total of 127 have been deported on trumped up charges of child pornography according to the US-based Pilipino Workers Center (PWC), which is spearheading the effort to support the Filipino seafarers.

“BBM should stand up to Donald Trump and fight for the rights of Filipino seafarers by demanding the reinstatement of their revoked working visas. Our kababayans are simply trying to earn a living but have fallen victim to Trump’s war on immigrants and migrant workers,” stated Judy Ann Miranda, PM secretary general.

In the latest incident documented by PWC, four Filipino crew of the cruise ship Jewel of the Seas that was docked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida were arrested by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and then deported. Deportation meant that their US working visas were revoked and they could not return to the US for 10 years.

Earlier on August 23, two Filipinos along with one Indonesia crew of the cruise ship Carnival Sunshine were taken for questioning by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The two Filipinos were released but not after being subjected to questioning for purported possession of child pornography videos on their cell phones. After this incident a wave of arrests and deportations followed.

According to PWC, the following were the latest incidents:

  • July 9 & 11, 2025 – 13 Filipinos deported from Victory I and Victory II cruise ships, home port: Chicago’s Navy Pier.
  • August 23, 2025 – 3 Filipinos from Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, port: Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
  • August 30, 2025 – 4 individuals arrested (3 Filipinos and 1 Serbian), with 1 Filipino confirmed deported, Carnival Sunshine, Norfolk, Virginia.
  • September 1, 2025 – 4 Filipinos deported from Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, port: Port Canaveral, Florida.
  • September 6, 2025 – 4 Carnival Sunshine crew members deported, Norfolk, Virginia.
  • September 7, 2025 – 5 deported (4 Filipinos and 1 Indonesian) from Carnival Pride, port: Baltimore, Maryland.
  • September 14, 2025 – 1 Filipino deported from Carnival Sunshine, Norfolk, Virginia.
  • September 26, 2025 - 4 Filipinos deported from Jewel of the Seas, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

PM has been coordinating with PWC to extend solidarity with the Filipino seafarers. PM member and lawyer Ian Seruelo is assisting on the US side while PM organizers are helping the cause of Filipino seafarers who have been deported back to the Philippines.

“The case of Korean migrant workers reveal that it is possible to stand up to Trump,” according to Miranda. Some 300 Korean workers employed in a Korean-owned electric vehicle battery factory were arrested by officers of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in early September in Georgia, USA. This became a big issue in Korea because the workers who were deported were handcuffed and detained for hours. Korean businesses threatened to hold their investments in the US and as a result, the Trump administration apologized and promised to not blacklist the workers.

Miranda concluded that “Migrant workers in the US—whether Filipinos or Koreans—are being treated like criminals by the Trump regime. We call on migrant-sending countries to come together in defense of workers’ rights.”

Workers group call for release of Sumud activists, condemn Israeli interdiction of flotilla

Partido Manggagawa (PM) strongly condemns the illegal capture of hundreds of international activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israeli naval forces. This is not just a violation of international law but proof of how the apartheid regime of Israel uses violence to defend its interests, crush solidarity, and enforce a genocidal blockade on Palestinians in Gaza.

The flotilla was a peaceful mission—carrying food and medicine as a symbolic humanitarian aid. Its interception in international waters shows how Israel acts as a fortress for global capital, keeping Palestinians oppressed and starved. The activists’ action directly challenges the siege and exposes the governments that continue to fund, trade with, or protect Israel while pretending to show “concern.”

The famine in Gaza is not an accident but an outcome of a deliberate human-made crisis and entangled with the genocide by Israel with complicity by the world’s imperialist powers. Governments enable this through arms sales, trade, and silence. The flotilla has inspired solidarity. It is proof that people can resist and refuse this system of oppression.

Workers and unions show the real alternative. Dockworkers in Genoa threatened to block all of Europe if contact with the flotilla was lost, saying not a single nail would be shipped to Israel. Italy’s general strike for Gaza shows that organized labor has the power to disrupt the capitalist war machine and stand with the oppressed.

The flotilla’s greatest value is political—it breaks through the media and political shield protecting Israel and shows that the fight for Palestine is a fight for humanity itself. The activists—workers, socialists, and people from over 44 countries—represent a growing international resistance.

With the backing of imperialist powers, Israel has once again shown its contempt for life and solidarity. Our task is to build people’s power and resistance—in workplaces, unions, and communities—to break not only the blockade on Gaza but the system that sustains it.

In line with anti-capitalist internationalism, PM demands:

§             The immediate release of all flotilla participants.

§             The lifting of the blockade on Gaza.

§             An end to all complicity by governments.

We call on workers and unions to block arms shipments and call on their governments to cut economic ties with Israel. Together we cooperate to build of a mass movement that links Palestinian liberation with the global struggle against capitalism, exploitation, and genocide.
